Could your apartment use a little sprucing up? Decorating your apartment is a task that many people enjoy doing on the weekends. It’s also another fun way to show off your design skills and personality.
You want to do some decorating and you even have a ton of decorating ideas, but there’s just one small problem… you’re a little short on cash.
Decorating can become somewhat of a hassle and quite expensive, which you can avoid by careful planning and creating a strict budget. Here are a few ways you can spruce up your apartment while on a strict budget.
Security Deposit
When you consider redecorating there is something you need to remember… your security deposit. If you had to pay a deposit and you change things, such as painting the walls or hooking up your flat screen TV to the wall then there is a slight chance that you won’t get your deposit back when you move out.
Refurnishing Furniture
In the past you saw designers on the former TLC shows While You Were Out and Trading Spaces reuse some of the homeowner’s furniture pieces. All they did to make them look brand new was add some fresh paint or refurnished the piece all together. Doing this is inexpensive and will make your furniture look brand new in no time!
Look for Sales
Moving into your first apartment without any furniture? This is where Craigslist, thrift stores and garage sales are going to come in handy. Rummage through these places and you’re bound to find something you like. It’s just like that popular saying, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” Keep in mind with a little bit of paint and some sanding down, that old dresser will look like you paid a lot for it when really you paid around $40.
Have some favorite photographs that you took? Check flea markets and target for some cheap frames. If you’re an artist yourself, purchase a small canvas and create your own artwork. It’s inexpensive and one of a kind.
Adding Some Color with Accessories
Plants and flowers can add some color and charm to your place. This is inexpensive and an easy way to improve your space in a matter of seconds.
Rugs are another way to give your room some personality. You don’t have to spend a lot on rugs either. Ikea and Target are great places to get gorgeous rugs at low prices. Craigslist and eBay could also be a few places to check out if you’re on an even tighter budget.
Decorating is stressful for many people on a tight budget. Because of this it’s recommended to try and do one room at a time. Renting your first place is a huge and over whelming process. Don’t let decorating your new place become a horrible experience. You can still show off your personality without spending a lot of money.
